As 2016 comes to an end, it’s time to start thinking about your New Year’s resolutions and how you’re going to make 2017 memorable.
Here are our 7 favourite New Year’s resolutions for 2017.
1. Try Something New
Step out of your comfort zone in 2017. Say yes to something that you generally wouldn’t. Leaning into discomfort is the best way to learn!
2. Spend More Time Outside
During the winter months, it can be hard to find the motivation to get outside. Thankfully, if you live in Toronto there is a ton to do so you will never be bored. We recommend skating, exploring new neighbourhoods, or walking (or running) our amazing city trails!
Giving back is not only a great use of time, but it feels pretty good too. Consider donating some of your free time to a charity that you connect with. A few organizations Talk Boutique supports is Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada, United Way, and TEDxToronto. Choose one and give your time. You won’t regret it!
4. Write More
If you want to become a better speaker, you must have something to say. Set aside one hour once a week to articulating your ideas, improving your craft, and track your progress.
These days it can be hard to disconnect from the digital world, but it can be beneficial to do so. Try to turn everything off an hour before bed to allow your body to prepare for sleep. This simple step will help you feel well rested the following day.
6. Read More
Are you a Goodreads member? Every year they challenge their members to set a reading goal. You can track your progress online and keep track of what your friends are reading.
We recommend putting the following books on your reading list for 2017:
- Last Days of Night by Graham Moore
- TED Talks: The Official TED Guide Public Speaking by Chris Anderson
- Exponential Organizations: Why new organizations are ten times better, faster, and cheaper than yours (and what to do about it) by Salim Ismail
- Hostage to Myself by Paul Nadeau
- The Donohue Mentoring System™ by Mary Donohue
7. Take a Class
Take time to improve your craft in 2017 by signing up for a class. We believe in continuous learning which is why we offer regular workshops. If improving your speaking and presentation skills is on your to-do list, consider registering for one of our upcoming workshops.
