Tips for Applying to Speak at TED2018

Nov 24, 2017 | Presenting Tips

Has it been a dream of yours to speak on the TED stage? Well, this might be your chance! TED is hosting an Idea Search in New York City on January 24, 2018.

To apply, you must submit a 1-minute preview of your talk as well as an application.

Here are our tips on how to prepare a compelling audition video.

Formulate Your Idea

Spend some time in a quiet place writing down all of the key messaging you want to address in your application. But remember, you only have 1-minute to ‘wow’ the TED team so don’t go overboard. Prepare your ideas in a clear and concise manner and ask yourself, “How does my topic connect to the TED2018 theme Age of Amazement?”

Practice on Your Own

Spend some time practicing your talk in front of the mirror to become more comfortable. It is also beneficial to record yourself so that you can review your work and make the necessary revisions before you submit your video.

Practice in Front of Friends or Family

If you are comfortable, practice your talk in front of friends and family. This isn’t always easy, but if you want to do this, you must to be open to receiving feedback. Receiving positive and/or negative feedback will only help you improve your application video.

Revise

Based on the feedback you receive, make changes and practice again. Try to memorize what you want to say rather than reading from a script. Let your personality shine through!

Submit Your Application

The deadline to submit your application is on December 5, 2017, so you will want to get started soon! Please make sure that you read the instructions on how to submit an application.

TED2018 will take place in Vancouver from April 10-14, 2018. We wish you the best of luck with your application!
