10 Simple Steps to Become a Better Public Speaker

So you want to become a better public speaker, but don’t know where to start? Here are 10 simple steps to help you get started.

1. Practice, Practice, Practice

Practice your talk in front of a mirror, to your pet or friends and family. The more you practice the more confident you will be with the content you are speaking about.

2. Know Your Audience

Understand who your audience is and tailor your talk to fit who you are speaking to. Use terminology that they will understand to keep their attention and gain their trust.

3. Speak Slowly

Speak slowly to allow your audience to digest the information you are presenting to them and pause for effect.

4. Organize Your Ideas

Organize your ideas in a clear and concise manner. Remember, you will understand your content inside and out, but this is the first time your audience is hearing your talk. Make it easy for them to follow along.

5. Take a Class

Improving your public speaking abilities and stage presence is an ongoing process, which is why we offer regular workshops. Consider taking a class if you are new to public speaking, are interested in improving your craft, or just enjoy learning.

6. Stand With Confidence

Your posture and the way you present yourself in front of an audience is extremely important. Stand tall and confident to help convey your message. If you are confident your audience will be more willing to accept the information you are providing.

7. Welcome Feedback

Use your friends and family as an audience to practice your talk, and welcome their feedback. They may notice something that you haven’t.

8. Make Eye Contact

To better connect with your audience make eye contact while you speak. Move your eyes around the room – let your audience know that you see them.

9. Believe What You Are Speaking About

If you truly believe what you are speaking about, your audience will also believe it. This goes hand in hand with being confident on stage.

10. Hire a Speaker Coach

Hiring a speaker coach will give you structure and the ability to grow into a strong presenter. This can be beneficial to both your professional and personal life. You will learn how to hold yourself on stage, connect with your audience and give a truly amazing talk.
